Trip #233 St Thomas Street to Regina Street Southside Slopes, Pittsburgh took place on December 27, 2018, and was published on January 9, 2019.
Many houses in Pittsburgh have stairs going up to them, but these homes on Regina Street have stairs going down; individual wooden flights descending from street-side car door to front door. The sidewalk below is nearly identical to the one around the corner, except it’s bordered by a tall retaining wall, a feature which conveniently assists in the stacking of post-holiday trash bags, cardboard boxes, tinsel, and dried out conifers. Whether your garbage is hidden away or in plain sight, this time of year is about cleaning out, clearing out the old and making room for the new, and enjoying a bit more space now that the tree is out of the living room! Just be sure you remember to #reducereuserecycle
Field Notes: These houses sit well below street level and the stairs go down to a sub-sidewalk. It’s kind of unique – haven’t seen that in other places!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
