Elsie Street to Charcot Street Arlington Trip 247

February 11, 2019Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Arlington

Trip #247 Elsie Street to Charcot Street, Arlington, Pittsburgh took place on January 26, 2019, and was published on February 11, 2019.

Two women are outside talking. One stands on the porch and the other at the gate below. I can’t hear what they’re saying, but their voices are upbeat and enthusiastic. They don’t seem to mind the brutal, sub-freezing temperatures. The woman on the porch hasn’t offered to continue the conversation inside, and the woman at the gate doesn’t seem in a rush to leave. They’re happy and comfortable right where they are. I, on the other hand, am not. My fingers pained with cold, my neck and scalp irritated and chafed by cheap woolens. But as I finish up my photos and notes, the sun breaks through the grey. There’s no warmth attached to it, but it does offer a small dose of the enthusiasm expressed by the women and their chatter – still coming from the porch and gate.

Field Notes: Snowy January day here in Pittsburgh. This flight is one block up from #246. My car made it into the photo! 🙂

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
