Trip #265 Gold Way to North Craig Street, North Oakland took place on March 15, 2019, and was published on March 25, 2019.
Compared to the other buildings on this street, the graffiti is old, faded, chipped and peeling. Not unlike the stairs, which are reasonably stable but a bit disheveled around the edges and will be wholly obscured once the knotweed appears. I wonder why this spot became a graffiti graveyard. By all appearances, it was a favored spot at one time – but no longer. What changed? Security cameras? Vicious guard dogs? The past is apparent, but it sheds no light on the absence of present use. The Magic 8 Ball tells me “Cannot predict now.”
Field Notes: This is at the top of Denver Street around the corner from the old Pittsburgh Filmmakers building. You’d probably NEVER see this flight once the knotweed grows in! It’s kind of eroded but still functional.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
