Trip #272 Nordica Street, Hazelwood took place on April 2, 2019, and was published on April 10, 2019.
In the stories of the Norse gods, Odin is depicted as a bearded old man, a wanderer, a traveler, garbed in a long cloak and wide-brimmed hat. Carrying a spear, he is accompanied by wolves and ravens in his quest for knowledge. It doesn’t take much imagination to envision Odin traversing these sparsely-populated and forested hillsides near the street which bears his name. The gods that created a bustling, densely packed neighborhood a hundred years ago have long since moved on to other territories, but the ruins remain. Perhaps they provide Odin and his companions a moment of glorious reminiscence as they re-count the days of yore.
Field Notes: Wow! Amazing ruins are still here and because it’s early April, they’re still in view. Also checked these out from the top section of Nordica Street on Odin / Ampere Streets. Very cool.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
