Trip #278 Jancey Street, Morningside took place on April 13, 2019, and was published on April 24, 2019.
Death seizes everything, but spring always returns. And with each new spring, each new bud and bloom in yellow and pink and white and purple we feel a surge of hope. We have battled against the dark dead winter and returned with the strength to persevere. Every human act, good or bad, is eventually lost to memory, lost to death, but in the spring, new memories fill our hands and minds, and in our moments of warmth and optimism, we share them with others, filling their hands and minds. In spring, we spring! We call upon our natural green energy and push out into the world; it’s another season and another chance for a new life.
Field Notes: The Jancey Street flight descends from the wall along Baker Street. There are lots of “off-shoots” to where houses (orphan houses I’m guessing) had once been. Not too many left these days!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
