Morningside to Nolo Way Stanton Heights Trip 281

May 1, 2019Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Morningside, Stanton Heights

Trip #281 Morningside Avenue to Nolo Way, Stanton Heights took place on April 18, 2019, and was published on May 1, 2019.

The automobile drastically changed the way Americans wanted to live. Once you had a car, no more reliance on walking, a trolley, or a bus. Once you had a car, you didn’t need to live close to the market, the school, the job, the family. A quick, or not so quick, journey in the comfort of your car could bring you anywhere you wanted to go. You could live where you wanted to, not where you needed to. As I think these thoughts, cars move up and down Greenwood at a steady pace. This street is steep and narrow, but that doesn’t deter drivers. It also doesn’t stop the young man who trudges up the stairs past me. The automobile drastically changed the world, but it only changes your life when you have one.

Field Notes: Despite the fact that this street is very narrow and has a steep grade, it doesn’t stop the cars from streaming through in both directions! Must be a cut-through of some sort. The sidewalk steps are still in reasonably good shape with some “sinking” in spots.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
