Trip #282 Morningside Avenue to Jancey Street, Morningside took place on April 18, 2019, and was published on May 3, 2019.
Your mobility affects what you do and how you do it. When you have a challenging time getting around, be it physically or situationally, the world becomes smaller. Simple tasks become complicated, time-consuming, and potentially exhausting. These considerations are easy to forget when you have lots of movement options at your disposal and the ability to create the physical shapes that an active life requires. Not everyone experiences pleasure and excitement when faced with an uneven walking path or a leaning tower of stairs. I’m fortunate and thankful that I can navigate both with lightness and ease.
Field Notes: The sidewalk stairs part are close to being obliterated, and the wooden stairs near Jancey Street are like the leaning tower of Pisa (but you can still climb up and down). Quite a pretty “countryside” look for the start of spring!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
