Trip #286 Hodge Street, South Oakland took place on April 27, 2019, and was published on May 13, 2019.
Forrest Gump may have thought life was like a box of chocolates because you never know what you’re going to get, but I think life is like an iceberg. For every bit I see, for every bit I think I know, there’s 90% more I can’t even begin to fathom. When I want to navigate that gigantic expanse of unknown, the insights and experiences of others are helpful. One person never has all of the answers, but when I listen without judgment, I begin to map the uncharted expanse and the dark murkiness develops some definition. It’s doubtful I’ll ever see the iceberg in its entirety but I’m slowly comprehending what isn’t always visible to the eye. And right now, I’m eyeing that box of chocolate and whatever flavor I end up with is fine by me!
Field Notes: This is a sidewalk flight that runs to the end of Hodge Street. Despite being so close to the Thruway it’s relatively quiet!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
