Trip #287 Frazier Street, South Oakland took place on April 22, 2019, and was published on May 15, 2019.
Imagine having a conversation with an old friend who’s been out of your life for a long time. Even before you start catching up, you both notice the characteristics that have changed since the last time you met (your relative size, shape, or hairstyle), but others traits may still be as crystal clear as the day you first met: that unique coloration in the eyes, a dimpled smile, or hands that punctuate the air while talking. And so, while change is inevitable, it’s not always all-encompassing, and the subtle qualities that remain the same are all it takes to bring on a sparkle of reminiscence about the adventures you once shared and what life has brought your way in the passing years.
Field Notes: Visited this area with Bob Regan. The Frazier Street flight, and the Romeo Street connector which intersects it, are his self-professed “favorites.” Bob was a bit dismayed by the run-down condition of this flight – it’s stable, but the rails are loose and missing in places. Also, the street signs for the two “stair streets” at the base of Romeo are long gone. A lot has changed in 20 years!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
