Trip #302 Rising Main Way, Fineview, took place on June 14, 2019, and was published on June 21, 2019.
Rising Main Way is Pittsburgh’s third longest public stairway still open to pedestrian traffic. At its base, it appears easily traversed – not very different than any other flight of stairs, but don’t let the humble beginnings deceive you. RMW provides a challenge whether you’re traveling up or down, and you must continuously evaluate whether you can keep your pace or slow down and risk losing momentum. Once you start on these stairs, there no turning away, so commit yourself to the task at hand and keep your eyes open. The shifting and sloping landscape offers both valuable and entertaining information for your safety and enjoyment.
Field Notes: These are some of the biggies!! Officially, it’s #4 on the list of longest stairways in Pittsburgh but it becomes #3 as 57th Street in Stanton Heights is now closed to the public at the upper reaches.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
