Trip #313 Hawkins Avenue, Perry South, took place on June 29, 2019, and was published on July 17, 2019.
How often do we hear “it’s the journey, not the destination” that’s most important in living our lives? But in a world where we’re often striving to get ahead, or trying to not fall further behind, it’s easy to become fixated on accomplishments and the temporary satisfaction they confer. Obsessions of any sort create a tunnel vision that dims our ability to see the beauty in all that inhabits the periphery. And it’s the fascinating, intriguing, and memorable people, places and things occupying the sidelines that make the destination so much more than a fleeting moment of happiness: They are the ones who give us the stories to last a lifetime.
Field Notes: This is the lower section of the Hawkins Avenue “paper street” and like the mid-section flight, it is wooden. I wonder why the top section was constructed in concrete but the lower parts of wood?
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
