Trip #315 Veteran Street to Sherlock Street, Perry South, took place on July 7, 2019, and was published on July 22, 2019.
People respond to how you carry yourself, so stand tall and proud and embrace what is around you. Even if the land at your feet is overgrown and littered, give yourself the poise and majesty of the royal family stepping out onto a balcony to greet adoring well-wishers. It takes a certain toughness to own who you are, wherever you might be, but deep down inside, you know you’re tough enough to be that person. Royalty is royal whether you’re the Queen of England in Buckingham Palace or the Queen of a bamboo patch on Daisey Street. Stake your claim and take pride in who you are!
Field notes: This is an overgrown flight on Daisey Street (connecting Veteran Street to Sherlock Street) with plenty of dumped yard refuse and cut branches. Someone who lived here at one point planted REAL bamboo (not Japanese knotweed) and it’s quite noticeable on the empty lot.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
