Trip #319 Wilson Avenue to Perrysville Avenue, Perry South, took place on July 18, 2019, and was published on July 31, 2019.
Some days, I feel like no one takes “the high road” anymore. Life appears to be a massive race to the bottom where everyone is callously grubbing and grabbing for any little advantage. But even in my disheartened state I know it doesn’t have to be that way, and very often it isn’t. Every day we make a choice to let a person advance or intentionally block their way, to rationally evaluate or irrationally jump to conclusions, to speak the truth or be deceitful. I have to remind myself that for every time I avoid “the low road” and act with integrity and compassion that many other people are doing the same. I know they’re out there helping to create a better life for today and for tomorrow, even if I don’t always see them.
Field notes: Sidewalk stairs connecting Wilson Ave to Perrysville Ave on a Belgian block street that’s very steep! (Cutler Street) in Perry South. The beautiful building at the top of the street used to be a general store but is now all boarded up.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
