Trip #321 Irwin Avenue, Perry South, took place on July 18, 2019, and was published on August 5, 2019.
Sometimes we find ourselves “in the weeds” where we’re so overwhelmed that it’s almost impossible to determine what should be done next. Paralysis sets in, we fear making any choice, and we pretend nothing is wrong. While navigating with blinders on means you’re unaware of potential problems, it also means you’re unaware of possible solutions, so muster up your courage, rip that blindfold off and honestly survey the situation. Use your hands to part the weeds, and in time you’ll find a clear place to step. If you do this often enough, in time, a way out will appear.
Field notes: Another section of the Irwin Avenue stairs. This flight is all overgrown but it appears to be OK. It’s on a street that is blocked off with jersey barriers despite the fact that the area looks fine. Will need to investigate this one again in the winter when the “plant life” has died down!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
