Trip #341 Elora Way, Garfield

Elora Way Hazelwood Trip 341

September 23, 2019Laura ZurowskiFiled Under: Garfield

Trip #341 Elora Way, Garfield, took place on September 7, 2019, and was published on September 23, 2019.

Here on Elora Way, there were once a set of wooden stairs connecting Jordan Way to Kincaid Street. But the reality of those stairs is long gone, replaced by a fence and referenced only by an asphalt path. Around the corner, though, a new reality is being envisioned – an older brick house is covered in a swarm of young people wielding tools of all sorts. They hang out of windows, climb along the roof, and collect along the front walkway, talking and laughing. Their enthusiasm is so contagious that, like the house, I feel myself transform. Hopeful, confident, and ready for whatever reality the future brings.

Field Notes: In Bob Regan’s book/notes, he indicated this had been a wooden flight and that when he visited in the early 00s it was already pretty decayed. Not surprisingly, there is nothing here now.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
