Trip #350 Rialto Street to Lowrie Street, Troy Hill, took place on September 21, 2019, and was published on October 14, 2019.
When you gain a little elevation, it’s easier to see the world as it is and not as you’re expecting it to be. Creating expectations is such a part of the human experience that despite the suffering it often causes, we continue creating them anyway (as well as all the excuses, reasons, and stories for why it is necessary). If we let ourselves see the joy and beauty that is found in reality a bit more often, some of that suffering might fall away.
Field Notes: With the railings painted dark blue, these stairs stand out as you’re going down Rialto Street. At the top, there’s a nice view of the area below and out toward the 31st Street bridge. Fortunately, it’s all fenced in – so no danger of falling!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
