Trip #356 Heckleman Street, Troy Hill, Pittsburgh took place on October 9, 2019, and was published on October 28, 2019.
We all need a helping hand once in a while. We can all benefit from a hug and a few kind words when they are genuine and heartfelt. Sometimes, a pathway in our life closes: it crumbles, becomes overgrown, and no longer leads to the place we expected it to. But that doesn’t have to be the end of the journey. There will always be other ways to travel. When you think you can go no further on the path, look around for helping hands, hugs, and kind words. They’re always much closer than you think.
Field Notes: According to Bob Regan’s notes from 20 years ago, when he visited the Heckleman Street stairs, it was already closed and abandoned – he couldn’t even get a steps count. His notes indicated, however, that the view over the river was fantastic. My thoughts are that this flight was closed during one of the many expansions of Rt. 28, East Ohio Street which lies directly below.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
