Trip #364 Westborn Street, Marshall-Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on October 29, 2019, and was published on November 15, 2019.
Confidence can breed success, and success further builds confidence, but too much of either can lead to a distorted sense of infallibility and a disconnection from reality. When left unchecked, success-focused chutzpah and motivation can quickly morph into arrogance, entitlement, and disdain for others. But it’s never too late to lace up a pair of boots and walk a mile or two through a neighborhood that’s different from your own. Talking the talk might make you a good talker, but walking the walk keeps you humble, appreciative, and connected to the community. It may even be a sure-fire recipe for authentic, longer-lasting success.
Field Notes: A short, connecting flight to trip #366 – another section of Westborn Street. There are some lovely grasses that are planted alongside the stairs in the yard of the house. They make the most relaxing sound as they rustle in the wind!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
