Trip #365 Smithton Avenue, Marshall Shadeland, Pittsburgh took place on November 1, 2019, and was published on November 18, 2019.
When an obstacle presents itself, it’s easy to get frustrated, angry, or adopt a defeatist attitude. But instead of doing any of those things, take some time to look at the situation objectively and search for the truth that is within what stands in your way. When you have an understanding of the role you play in the current obstruction, you’ll be better able to see the means to move around, over, under, or through it. You may even determine that the mountain isn’t much more than a mole-hill.
Field Notes: This raised sidewalk flight connects Smithton to Ingliss Street. It could use a fresh coat of paint on the railings but other than that it looks reasonably sound. Say a cute little cat hanging out near the top when I arrived. Grabbed a photo but the cat looks rather annoyed in it!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
