Trip #37 Harding Way 2 (south of Bigelow), Polish Hill, Pittsburgh took place on September 23, 2017, and was published on September 27, 2017.
The little metal sign tacked to the telephone pole reads, “A Fire Inside. Cook Something or Get Burned.” A fire can engulf you, destroy you, leave you charred like a cinder. But fire can be so hypnotic, so charmed. Seductive starshine sunbeams encircling your spine, fire is a cobra uncoiling, rising high to dance for you, dance with you. If you don’t shape its magic, you’ll suffer its painful bite.
~
So, are you going to cook or spend all day swiping through food porn? Get into the kitchen, call up the fire, the flame, and start working the heat. Fire only burns when you’re standing still.
Field Notes: The metal turkey is still here! I can never get a good photo of it – blends into the background and comes out blurry… Artwork still on the pole, still lots of beer cans on the ground too. This section of Harding Way is on the southern side of Bigelow Boulevard – heading into the Upper Hill.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
