Trip #392 Santiago Street, Perry North, Pittsburgh took place on December 26, 2019, and was published on January 27, 2020.
Authentic friendship is a practice in love and acceptance. We are imperfect beings. Friends are also imperfect beings. Through the years, as connections deepen, and life’s sorrows unfold, we learn that it is both the beautiful and the broken bits in our personalities that help us to maintain solidarity. The Japanese art of kintsugi binds imperfectly shaped and broken pottery together with gold, resulting in a unique beauty honoring the stages of its “life.” We are all re-assembled from imperfect and broken bits and held together in the most creative and unusual ways. And that’s precisely what our dearest friends accept and love about us, and us about them, so very much.
Field Notes: Oddly enough, this little section where the stairs are cannot be viewed on Google Street View. I wonder if it’s because it’s across from a school?
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
