Trip #4 Haverhill Street to Singer Street, East Hills, Pittsburgh took place on June 10, 2017, and was published on July 12, 2017.
I’m missing you today. I wish I had brought you with me. There’s so much trash scattered over the hillside that I can’t even begin to pick it up. Where would I put all of it? 😉 I sat for a bit, looking up at the green and when my eyes came back down, I noticed a young deer. It was all legs and ears and white tail flicking around listening to the cars and motorcycles, lawn mowers and birds. She folded herself into the base of a tree, the exposed roots encircling her. A deer nest, if such a thing exists. I felt reluctance at the thought of standing up and continuing along. The deer would be startled for certain, and I didn’t want to see her run away. But perhaps my hesitant nature is simply another excuse because I’m still anxious about moving on. Staying still has its comforts.
Field Notes: Lots of dumped trash here. That made me sad. Saw a baby deer while I was sitting and writing. When I got up to go she bounded away from her resting place at the base of a tree. So lovely.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
