Trip #403 Lanark Street, Fineview, Pittsburgh took place on January 25, 2020, and was published on February 21, 2020.
Most of us rarely give thought to walking – it’s something we do automatically. We walk from here to there. We walk to get this or that. We might count our steps or track our miles. But the first thing we all do is lift one foot and then put it down in front of the other. Like the older man walking slowly, deliberately with his cane. First, out the front door of the house to the railing of the sidewalk stairs. Then, down four steps to the passenger side of a car parked on the street. A younger version of the older man stands off to the side. They exchange only a few words.
“You got it?”
“I got it.”
One step at a time. In our own time. In our own way. With the Earth beneath the feet of all those walking from one place to another.
Field Notes: These are sidewalk stairs across from Fineview Park (which appears to be getting some kind of make-over). Great view of downtown as you walk down the street!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
