When you greet another with a smile and an open mind, you set an example for all those you meet. When you speak to another with peace and joy in your voice, you stir in others the desire to mirror you.

Francisco and George recently bought the house in front of the Cemetery Avenue city steps and, after spotting me out front with my camera, invited me inside to show off their remodeling efforts. Their welcoming nature and genuine happiness were prominent in our conversation about life, work, and their hopes for the future. While I may never cross paths with them again, their example of what it means to be neighborly will stay with me for a long time. Thank you. #HelloNeighbor
Field Notes: While taking the photo, the two guys who were fixing up the house came outside and asked if I wanted a tour! 🙂 Spent a fun half-hour talking with them.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
