Trip #408 Letsche Street to Olive Street, Fineview, Pittsburgh took place on February 15, 2020, and was published on March 4, 2020.
Our physical body is an absolute wonder. Just think about all those muscles and nerves and bones that come together to make us a sentient being who can perceive, reason, and think – it’s incredible! For millennia, the body was an opaque mystery, but today, modern science easily explains how it all comes together AND how it all falls apart. For despite all that knowledge, our physical presence still disintegrates over time. No different than a fallen tree or last year’s leaves. And all the world’s science, technology, and kale won’t stop that. But still, I wonder: If it could, would I want it to?
Field Notes: The long wooden flight feels a bit like climbing into a treehouse! The upper portion passes by stone outcroppings and takes you right through a stand of trees – it’s quite lovely!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
