Trip #420 Mutual Street, Sheraden, Pittsburgh took place on March 15, 2020, and was published on April 1, 2020.
Places change while our memories of them stay locked in time. In our minds, we can still walk through rooms, sit at the kitchen table, and play backyard games of tag, red light green light, and Chinese jump rope long after we’ve grown up and moved away. When we re-visit the old neighborhood, we marvel at the changes: a house repainted, a house remodeled, a house no longer there. And from the dirt pathways and scorched Earth, gardens appear, and trees grow from scrawny sticks into towering masses of green, not unlike the children who once lived there. The same children who now slowly drive by in their cars marveling at how so much time passes by in the blink of an eye.
Field Notes: The image on Google Street View of this section of the stairs on Mutual Street in Sheraden is so old that the pine trees are tiny! Hopefully, it will be updated soon!:-)
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
