Trip #425 Chartiers Ave to Tyndall Street, Sheraden, Pittsburgh took place on March 28, 2020, and was published on April 13, 2020.
We hear from all corners that we need to adapt. But we’re already accustomed to adapting because we do it every day of our lives – even if we don’t realize it. Take walking, for example. When we’re on a flat, easy street, our heart rate and breathing stay consistent. If we’re walking with someone, having a conversation feels natural. But when we start going up a steep hill (or flight of city steps), all that changes. We might need to slow down. We might find our heart racing or our breath becoming labored. We might pause the conversation until we reach the top. We adapt to the change in our environment. We might not enjoy the challenge, but we can do it. And in time, the challenge gradually melts away, and we find ourselves stronger than before.
Field Notes: Someone had a giant pile of trash for the garbage man piled at the bottom of the steps but the top had some pretty spring flowers blooming and that helped to make it a bit nicer.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
