Trip #428 Glen Mawr Street, Esplen, Pittsburgh took place on April 5, 2020, and was published on April 20, 2020.
When the city steps were first built, there were fewer cars – many people walked to where they needed to go, and most neighborhoods provided what people needed. Now that we’re spending our days and nights at home (and going a bit stir crazy), we’re rediscovering all the benefits of walking that our ancestors already knew. Walking gives you time to see the world around you. It keeps you fit and trim. It gives you a place to be alone for a little bit, but you can also use it to spend time with others if you’re heading in the same direction. While you’re walking, you can practice something you’ve been learning, mull over a perplexing problem, whistle a tune, say prayers, or dream about the future you’d like to have. Walking can help you accomplish as much or as little as you like. The choice has always been ours to make.
Field Notes: This is a narrow street full of twists and turns and train tracks that run overhead! (no tall trucks!) All right off of West Carson Street. Never even knew it was here.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
