Some folks may disagree, but I believe that cultivating good habits make us happier. These kinds of habits can be any behavior or routine we generally look forward to and undertake without much prompting. From teeth-brushing to creative practices or physical activities, habits provide a sense of structure and order to our days. Knowing you made the bed, wrote your morning pages, or meditated for ten minutes can help lift your spirits. And it’s especially powerful on days that are littered with other people’s garbage, bird poop falling from the sky, or re-emerging cadavers. On those days, when it seems as if nothing goes well, we can at least look back and give thanks for the good things our habits brought to us.
Field Notes: Half a block away, the Ashlyn Street stairs are closed and crumbling, but these on Boulder Way seem to be just fine. The may become overgrown in the summer (according to Google Street View) but in early April they are perfectly fine.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
