Trip #433 Merwyn Avenue, Sheraden, Pittsburgh took place on April 12, 2020, and was published on May 1, 2020.
All too often, we humans think we can predict the future. We fancy ourselves as fortune-tellers, crystal ball in-hand, watching the mists part from a time we’ve yet to inhabit. But our presumed certainties are nothing more than fantasy and speculation. Bob Dylan might not need a weatherman to tell him which way the wind blows, but he’d be hard-pressed to find a meteorologist who could correctly predict the weather for next week – never mind next year. Let’s put the Magic 8-Balls, tea leaves, and tarot cards aside and connect with what we know is true for today. Enjoy this moment for what it is, regardless of the blowing wind or tomorrow’s forecast. The only thing we can be sure of is that some things will change and others will stay the same.
Field Notes: This little step-down flight leads to the closed Ashlyn Street stairs but it gives a good view of just how crumbled and destroyed that flight really is.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
