Trip #44 30th Street, Bedford Dwellings, Pittsburgh took place on September 30, 2017, and was published on October 13, 2017.
Stumbling, falling, it’s a part of life. It starts when you’re learning to walk, and never stops. Sometimes, it’s the slippery slope, an untied shoe, disrupted pavement or a few too many cocktails. Sprawling face-first, or ass over teakettle, or one side giving way, crumpling gracefully or not so gracefully to the ground. If you’re lucky, pride takes the bruises rather than the body. ~
With the top rails missing and Bigelow Boulevard directly below, it’s too easy to take a deadly stumble and tumble right into traffic from these stairs. Please consider joining me in reporting this location to http://pittsburghpa.gov/innovation-performance/311.html or on Twitter at @PGH311. Thank you!
Field Notes: This flight is in bad shape for being so close to Bigelow Blvd. In several places, the top rails are missing – you could trip and flip right over! But, from this location, I can see the top of the closed section of this flight right across the street. It’s strange that that section is closed but this one is open. But, this is a quiet, out of the way street, so if no one reports anything it’s like the problem doesn’t exist.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
