Trip #458 Oakwood Road, Oakwood, Pittsburgh took place on June 14, 2020, and was published on July 3, 2020.
What’s your favorite season? What is it you like most about that season? For me, it’s summer and the lush and languid qualities, both environmental and physical, brought about by heat and humidity. (And yes, people call me crazy). Here at 40.4406° N, 79.9959° W, whatever your favorite season is, you have its opposite to thank for it. If you’re a cold-weather person, the earth needs the energy of spring and summer to grow and provide nourishment to creatures great and small. If you’re a summer person, fall and winter decay and hibernation are necessary for the soil to replenish. Sure, you could escape to the Poles or the Equator, but even those places experience seasonal changes. (Antarctica transitions from a balmy 0F to a chilly -60F!) So the next time you’re feeling like a hostage in your least favorite season, just remember that the parts you dislike most are responsible for creating your favorites!
Field Notes: Almost didn’t see this flight! It connects one dead end to another. It’s quite a lovely spot.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
