Trip #466 Fairview Street, Elliott, Pittsburgh took place on July 12, 2020, and was published on July 22, 2020.
When we’re pushed and pulled in many different directions, our stability weakens. As our lives become increasingly unstable, it’s harder to discern who to trust, which path to follow, or what to believe. Once familiar streets make us feel lost and alienated, and connections we had with friends and family fall away. Janis Joplin may be famous for saying that “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose,” but when we lose our emotional stability, we are no longer free. Instead, we become enslaved by an ever-tightening circle of jealousy and hatred, paranoia, and persecution. We cannot reclaim our freedom until we release those thoughts and beliefs, regain our rightful place in homes and neighborhoods, and stand strong and rooted like a tree. Gently bending, sometimes shaking, but never breaking.

Field Notes: This flight is in pretty decent shape but it’s in such a (now) quiet residential area that I wonder if anyone really uses it any more. The bottom part is very close to a home and it’s obvious that growth will soon cover the lower section.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
