Trip #479 Milroy Street, Perry South, Pittsburgh took place on August 6, 2020, and was published on August 21, 2020.
As a society, we don’t like to dwell on the in-between places, the in-between phases that aren’t exactly the past but not quite the future. We prefer to push aside these “Are we there yet?” times because they’re uncomfortable. They’re filled with uncertainty and frustration. They give us a sense of wandering lost in the desert, desperately searching for ideas, solutions, or actions that can alleviate our suffering. But spending time with our dis-ease helps us discern what it is and what it isn’t. So is abstaining from urges to turn back or rush ahead. Today is an end and a beginning and an in-between place. It is where we need to be – even if we dislike every moment of it.
Field Notes: This is a sidewalk flight that leads up to a larger raised flight that was photographed on visit #112 earlier on in this project. Milroy Street is very steep and has some hairpin turns as it leads up to Perrysville Avenue.

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
