Trip #48 Iowa Street, Upper Hill, Pittsburgh took place on October 4, 2107, and was published on October 23, 2017.
Hustle. Bustle. Run. Get a move on. Down the stairs. Get on the bus. Off to school. Off to work. Get off the bus. Up the stairs. And then… a pause. Leafy green treetops and twittering birds. A wide, clean flight of stairs makes for a comfortable place to take a seat and relax. Catch your breath. Slow it all down. It’s an easy-on-the-eyes kind of spot, beckoning you to stop and rest in this hidden place high above Centre Avenue.

And you want to do just that – to sit and listen to the birds and daydream. And I believe you. And one of these days you’ll have the time and space to go at an easier pace. But until then, it’s off you go!
Field Notes: The end of Iowa becomes a brick street, which is lovely to look at but not so pleasant for driving or walking. This is a pretty flight, made with cement? concrete? that has pebbles mixed in. It’s leafy and green and high above the hustle of Centre Ave.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
