Trip #488 Candace Street to Broadway Avenue, Beechview, Pittsburgh took place on August 19, 2020, and was published on September 14, 2020.
As adults, we often lose the feelings of wonder and excitement we held as children. We become pre-occupied with being “grown-ups” and concerned with our appearance and position in the world. We adopt attitudes that are jaded, cynical, or sarcastic. We follow the laws of the workplace jungle and bow our heads to the ceaseless flow of texts and emails, status reports, and analysis of the world around us. And that’s a shame because holding your head high can bring such joy to the soul. Look up at the world around you with curious eyes, an inquisitive mind, and an open heart. Let your arms and fingers and spine reach skyward like the tree. Feel your legs and feet and toes become grounded and firm like the stones. Remind yourself of the child you were. Remember that today is a beautiful day.
Field Notes: The giant trees and deliciously textured stone retaining wall are a fantastic backdrop for this flight of sidewalk steps running between Candace and Broadway (the building across the street is also pretty spectacular in a 1920s kind of way).

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
