Trip #49 Herron Avenue to Bedford Avenue, Bedford Dwellings, Pittsburgh took place on October 4, 2017, and was published on October 25, 2017.
Five streets meet here, and everyone has to wait. Everyone has to wait their turn. They stop. They go. They stop. They go. It’s an endless cycle all day long, all night long. The flower man stands at the bottom of the hill – that’s where the 6 street meet-up is, down at Bigelow. It’s a little flatter; the lights are red a little longer. He’s also waiting for cars to stop. Waiting for someone to look and give the sign drivers or passengers want what he’s offering today. I’m not looking at anyone; I don’t have anything to sell. I just want to take my photos and move along.
Field Notes: Sitting here at the major intersection up the street from the even MORE MAJOR intersection. I’m not enjoying being here – it’s loud and stressful and full of car exhaust smells – and I’m thinking how hard it must be for the flower man who spends all day at the intersection down the street.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
