Trip #490 Hillgrove Avenue to Broadway Avenue, Beechview, Pittsburgh took place on September 4, 2020, and was published on September 18, 2020.
I’m sure I’m not the only one thinking about the coming winter and what that’s going to mean for all of us living in Pittsburgh. Over the last six months, many of us have gone from staying inside almost exclusively to slowly venturing out, getting accustomed to masks, hand-sanitizer, and gauging what constitutes six feet of distance. We’ve enjoyed more time in city parks, walking around our neighborhoods, and socializing in back yards and front stoops than in years past, and I have to say I’ve come to appreciate it thoroughly! But as the skies darken earlier and the evening temperatures drop, I wonder how to adapt my COVID-necessitated outdoor lifestyle to the changing seasons. Because, in all honesty, returning to inside isolation feels soul-crushing. So, is anyone else thinking about this? What are your plans for surviving the next six months? Any recommendations for winter parkas and wool socks? Can a balaclava double as a mask when outside? Let’s help one another out before winter hits!
Field Notes: A very steep street with a much-needed flight of sidewalk steps. Crossed paths with a gentleman who lives on the street – as it turned out, he’s a musician who plays with the Truths & Rites reggae band that rehearses down the hill from my house. I told him how much I enjoy their music floating up the hillside!

Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
