Trip #531 Virginia Avenue to Shiloh Street, Mount Washington, Pittsburgh took place on November 29, 2020, and was published on December 28, 2020.
There’s a certain kind of joy found in resistance. Pleasure in going against the grain. Pride from standing outside the norm. The thrill of holding steadfast through fierce storms. When you firmly stake your claim and assert your presence, you release the chains of bondage imposed by others or yourself. Stand tall, stand strong, and will yourself to be the person you want to be. Remember that you have the right to be here. You have the right to be as you are and as you want to be. Refuse all who try to convince you otherwise. There are times when negotiation is not an option.
Field Notes: These steps appear to be cared for by the PNC Bank that is housed on the corner building (the rails are their signature blue). But, steps have been on this main street corner in Mount Washington since the 30s so it’s great they (and the area) have survived that long!

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
