Trip #535 Eureka Street, Mount Washington, Pittsburgh took place on November 29, 2020, and was published on January 11, 2021.
Pittsburgh’s concrete and steel are steeped in history, infused with one hundred and fifty years of stories. This vast collection of memories, both remembered and forgotten, transform our streets, stairs, buildings, and homes into a stage for generations of performances: tragedies and comedies, romances, intrigue, and the occasional sleep-inducing instructional presentation. Stored within our native elements’ DNA are passionately delivered monologues, songs and dances from around the globe, and epics featuring casts of thousands. If all the world’s a stage, and we are merely actors, the time has come to take our place. The time has come to take your place. Echoes of the past are calling. The second act is about to begin.
Field Notes: This little flight on Eureka Street runs right alongside the house and crosses over a driveway! The garage and driveway were probably not there when the stairs were originally built but now they feel more like private “house stairs” than city steps.
Love city steps? Get yourself the latest issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps! Each copy is unique and features 10 randomly selected “trading cards” of Pittsburgh’s 739 public stairways. Visit the Mis.Steps online store to see all issues and place your order.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
