Trip #597 Redrose Avenue, Carrick, Pittsburgh took place on June 9, 2021, and was published on June 14, 2021.
As the world is slowly re-opening, take a moment to think about the people we cross paths with throughout the day. Consider the person standing next to you in line at the check-out counter, the stylist cutting your hair, the dog walker strolling down the sidewalk, or the man selling flowers at the intersection. For some of us, these experiences are memorable after months of relative isolation. While life-changing random encounters are rare (except in Hollywood films and best-selling novels), we can choose how to change a moment. We can choose to say hello, smile sincerely, look a person in the eyes, and say a kind word, or simply, “Thank you very much.” It’s not a big thing, but it’s a spot of cheerfulness that can offer a pleasant surprise. A surprise that feels new and unexpected and creates beauty with a touch of joy.
Field Notes: I’m loving this section of Carrick that is off of Becks Run Road – lots of city steps, lots of pretty residential streets, and lots of good vibes!
Love city steps? Get yourself the latest issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps! Each copy is unique and features 10 randomly selected “trading cards” of Pittsburgh’s 739 public stairways. Visit the Mis.Steps online store to see all issues and place your order.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
