Trip #609 Glenbury Street to Pinecastle Avenue, Overbrook, Pittsburgh took place on July 4, 2021, and was published on July 14, 2021.
You don’t have to be imprisoned to lose your freedom. Anyone who considers themselves free can become trapped by malevolent patterns and addictions of every kind, financial and psychological insecurities, or intentional targeting. And releasing ourselves from these kinds of life sentences requires more than serving time with good behavior. We need to identify where and how we’re trapped. Is it the result of others, ourselves, or a combination of the two? What destructive, limiting, or hate-filled thoughts and actions are occurring? As painful and challenging as it may be, we need to seek out that knowledge, apply it to our lives and relationships, and start making changes to dissolve those very real yet invisible chains. Only then can we fully understand the struggles of those who desire to be free but who are not.
Field Notes: The expired Spectra film I’m using got a little blobby at the bottom but it kind of fits the scene! There are train tracks that run atop the bridge and the stairs run right down alongside it. Very cool views!
Love city steps? Get yourself the latest issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps! Each copy is unique and features 10 randomly selected “trading cards” of Pittsburgh’s 739 public stairways. Visit the Mis.Steps online store to see all issues and place your order.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
