Trip #610 Glenbury Street to Seldon Place, Overbrook, Pittsburgh took place on July 4, 2021, and was published on July 16, 2021.
Typically, when I come across trash on our city steps or hillsides, my emotions flare from anger to frustration to sadness. But on Seldon Place in Overbrook, a discarded holiday message left on the city steps brightened my spirit and helped me to see this space, with its smashed-up orphan house and scattered beer cans and plastic bottles a bit differently.
“Let us have a little warmth in the midst of winter…
Let us have a little peace amid the rush of daily life…
Let us have a little comfort, a little beauty, a little wonder…
Let us celebrate Christmas.” ~ Ellen Brenneman
Wishing everyone a very happy “Christmas in July.”
Field Notes: In Bob Regan’s book, this is listed at Fan Street, but I can’t find that listed on any map – current or historic. However, it was a fun place to walk: a curious kitty, an abandoned orphan house, a message from the Universe, and an old rock salt wooden box.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
