Trip #63 Waring Court, Terrace Village, Pittsburgh took place on October 20, 2017, and was published on November 27, 2017.
This old road, this closed-off road, is smooth and grey and white and worn. Made of something they don’t use anymore to make roads, it’s almost soft to the touch. Perhaps it’s the softness that allows the earth to return. Soon, this road will be gone, disappearing behind the chain link fences, under the flowering weeds and scrappy trees that push up and around and through.

I don’t see any stairs or remains of stairs that would have brought eager feet down to Kennard Field. The past is closed-off, re-named, and rented out for a new day, a new chapter.
Field Notes: No luck finding stairs or signs of stairs around here. The old road is closed and even though people clearly sneak through, this is one I didn’t want to trespass on.
As an interesting side note, since I began publishing these stories to the Pittsburgh Missed Connections forum on Craigslist in July, this post was the first to be flagged and removed. The sixty-two prior messages didn’t cause enough “trouble” to be removed but this one did? Strange. I wish I knew why!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
