Trip #663 Crosby Avenue, Beechview, Pittsburgh took place on November 7, 2021, and was published on November 15, 2021.
When we ponder the question, “What is the past?” each person will provide a different answer. Each mind embraces and eschews, holds, and clings to a unique version of yesterdays, glory days, childhood days, and the unseen inherited days of parents, grandparents, and ancestors. While we share some common ground as creatures living in this particular time in history, how we’ve experienced the collective past is similar yet different. This individual perspective makes counting backwards down the number line hazy, lossy, and never as straightforward as we think it should be.
Field Notes: This is another old sidewalk flight that I almost didn’t find. The original sidewalk steps are now hidden behind large hedges and a new-er retaining wall/barricade that protects the homes from cars traveling on the steep street. Chicken Latino is right at the very top and it’s easier to see the steps from their entrance.
Love city steps? Get yourself the latest issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps! Each copy is unique and features 10 randomly selected “trading cards” of Pittsburgh’s 739 public stairways. Visit the Mis.Steps online store to see all issues and place your order.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
