Trip #69 Rothlein Way, Spring Garden, Pittsburgh took place on October 25, 2017, and was published on December 11, 2017.
Once upon a time, a popular self-help book asked the question, “What color is your parachute?” A parachute helps ease your landing, slows the descent, softens the blow of harsh reality when you hit the ground.

A railing, on the other hand, offers stability and guidance over the uneven and uncertain terrain. A railing lets you move as fast or as slow as you want, and you can completely refuse its assistance if you choose. I like the color of the Rothlein Way stairway railings; it’s a deep fiery red like the color of the buildings at the bottom of the flight. The color of leaves and ivy just hit by freezing temperatures. It’s a noticeable color. Confident and prepared to help facilitate your journey up, down, or just standing still.

What color is your railing?
Field Notes: The railings are a great color, but the weather was a bit too cold for the Polaroid. See the corresponding iPhone photo for the real look!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
