Trip #693 Kirkpatrick Street, West Oakland, Pittsburgh took place on February 9, 2022, and was published on February 16, 2022.
Getting involved in community service is rarely a poor choice; our efforts and participation genuinely do add up to make a difference. At the end of the day, authentic satisfaction can be discovered through a job well done, or a mission accomplished. This feeling holds true for both organized volunteer events and the quiet, personal labors individuals take on every day. Owning tools or having certain skills may be helpful, but they are not necessary. All that’s required is you and your desire to be a part of the transformation.
Field Notes: This little corner flight is right at the busy intersection where Kirkpatrick meets the Birmingham Bridge. Many of the still existing row houses along this strip are in tough shape despite it being such a central location (there are a few exceptions though, some houses are undergoing repairs). Stairs in this area date back to the 1923 maps but this tiny flight wouldn’t have been recorded as a street so we may never know when it was originally constructed.

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
