Trip #706 Dengler Street, Arlington, Pittsburgh took place on March 11, 2022, and was published on March 18, 2022.
Every day we quickly and almost effortlessly tackle minor hindrances. But because we’re so efficient at bating away small issues, it’s easy to avoid looking at major ones. We count our daily wins, give ourselves a high five for our productivity and decide not to look back over our shoulder at the problem looming OVER THERE (which seems just a wee bit closer than it did before… or is that my imagination?) To overcome significant obstacles, we have to temporarily forget the small stuff, take stock of the situation, and create actionable steps. This process can be challenging work, so approach with kindness and compassion. After all, that big problem is likely feeling annoyed (and a little lonely) because it’s been neglected for so long! Make a point to smile and say hello and start giving it the attention it needs.
Field Notes: This short leads to a sidewalk raised above the street. The condition is just fine but given all the leaves and branches gathering, it doesn’t appear to get much use anymore. Maybe people are afraid of the zombies that live across the street…

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
