Trip #709 Luella Street to Heim Street, Spring Hill City View, Pittsburgh took place on March 20, 2022, and was published on March 25, 2022.
There will always be places where things fall away, and it’s decided that the decay and disintegration are not worth fixing. But despite the repercussions, people persist and go on with their ordinary lives. We can spend a lot of time pondering why this happens, but we already know the answers and all their myriad and complex rationales. Today’s people and places want to be recognized for who they are, what they are, not as how they compare to some sepia-toned historical photograph version of themselves. So despite the fault lines, let’s look at what’s still standing. Let’s walk up and down these steep and narrow streets and celebrate the tenacity which allows life to continue. #EastStreetValley #ForgottenNeighborhoods
Field Notes: I photographed the upper portion of this flight on Trip #114 but this is the part that connects down to Luella. The street is very narrow and curved and close to the area that has been closed off due to the landslides a few years back.
Love city steps? Get yourself the latest issue of Mis.Steps: Our Missed Connections with Pittsburgh’s City Steps! Each copy is unique and features 10 randomly selected “trading cards” of Pittsburgh’s 739 public stairways. Visit the Mis.Steps online store to see all issues and place your order.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
