Trip #82 Butler Street to Sawyer Street, Stanton Heights, Pittsburgh took place on November 21, 2017, and was published on January 15, 2018.
The flow of the Allegheny is soooooo s-l-o-w.
Or at least not as fast as the cars on Route 28 in Sharpsburg.
Or the cars below me on Butler Street.
~
It’s soooooo easy to speed along in a car.
Go faster, faster, faster, faster!
Simply because you can.
~
When you travel the same road day in and day out
day in and day out
day in and day out
the path grows automatic, and before you know it, you’re at your destination without remembering the journey.
Seeing, but not seeing the river. This hillside filled with fallen trees and broken branches. These city stairs with peeling brown railings and leaf covered steps. Me, sitting in the midst and watching it all.
Field Notes: OK, call me crazy, but it appears this flight is listed twice in the Appendix of Bob Regan’s “Pittsburgh Steps: The Story of the City’s Public Stairways” …. one without a build date and another with. I looked all over Sawyer to see if there was another flight but nothing. So… this is the first image of the location.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
